Dear Friends,

I am delighted to inform you of the latest achievements at FLAME as we welcome the new-year. Within the current global, political, environment- there has been an ever-pressing call for education, inspiration and tolerance within the deprived and vulnerable communities in which FLAME works. We would like to interpose the negative news you hear with some positive achievements and success stories from Pakistan. Here at FLAME in addition to our usual work we have begun to expand our horizons and provide further opportunity to progress through the adoption of dilapidated government schools and the opening of vocational training centers.

From all the teachers and pupils- thank you for your support!

Balochistan

Flame is very proud to now have 15 schools in Balochistan

10 Schools in Hub area and 5 schools in Khuzdar.

These schools are meeting the educational needs of over 450 girls and boys from the localities.

Healthcare

Flame has increased the number of doctors visiting children via FLAME’s Mobile Health Unit’s (MHU’s) from 5 to 10. The MHU’s visit ten FLAME schools each week, five on Tuesday’s and five on a Saturday’s. The MHU in Islamabad has been revived, visiting a total of eleven schools per week, treating approximately 400 children per month. The cost of medicines, transport and the pay for the Doctor amounts to approximately Rs 50/40pence per child- ensuring each child is visited every twelve weeks and their record updated and health concerns addressed.

Vocational Training

FLAME has opened one vocational training centre- an existing stitching school was adopted and improved by FLAME, now providing women of the locality with the desired tailoring and stitching skills in 12 week training sessions. Approximately 25 women of the community are empowered via these skills, since they can work from home or seek outside employment and use the skills to involve themselves in income-generating activities.
2 further are being built, one in Landhi and one in Baldia- mainly for FLAME school-leavers. These cost approximately Rs.1.2 million each to construct and have been generously funded through donations from the British and German Speaking Women’s Associations of Karachi and from the Lord Mayor of the City of London.

One centre is to be opened to provide 60 girls and 60 boys with skills that will enable them to get on in life and seek employment within their locality, meeting demand for the skills that they have learned. These will include: electrical work, plumbing, welding, needlework, embroidery skills and beautician skills.
